A simple, proven system for NZ schools

Transform handwriting. Remove a massive barrier to learning.

The Handwriting Recovery Program is a structured, school-wide intervention that rebuilds handwriting fluency through metacognitive muscle-memory training and student ownership over the process.

Zero curriculum disruption. Minimal extra teacher workload. Real, measurable progress.

How the System Works

Fits naturally into Homeform, literacy support, or detention.

1. Identify students

In the first week of school, use the identification activity during Homeform to find students needing handwriting recovery. Look for speed, neatness, legibility, and signs of physical struggle.

2. Order workbooks & notify whānau

Order the appropriate workbooks (Primary, Intermediate/Secondary, Cursive). Use the ready-made parent and staff email templates to introduce the program and invite support.

3. Train with structure

Students set a handwriting goal, learn correct mechanics, train in the Dojo at the back of the book, and complete short handwriting missions during Homeform.

4. Assess, celebrate, and certify

On completion, students self-assess their progress and receive a certificate of achievement — ideally presented at assembly to celebrate the school’s commitment to excellence.

What teachers are saying

Early feedback from classrooms using the Handwriting Recovery Program.

“Within a few weeks, students who had avoided writing were suddenly more confident. The structure made it easy to run in Homeform.”

— Year 9 Dean, Auckland

“It gave us a clear, consistent system instead of random worksheets. Parents really appreciated having something concrete at home.”

— Literacy Lead, Intermediate School

“The missions and the Dojo made it feel like a challenge, not a punishment. Our reluctant writers actually stuck with it.”
